A study from Duke University showed that the way in which doctors communicated with patients about their weight loss affected their success--it is better to be Dr. Mark Green than Dr. Greg House, when this subject of weight.

The study is published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Researchers recorded conversations between 40 primary care doctors and 461 of their overweight or obese patients over an 18 month period. Investigators tracking how much time was spent and specifically, how doctors spoke with their patients about diet, exercise and weight loss. (the doctors told not to use the researchers searched).

Doctors discussed weight with patients in 69% of cases. Doctors spent an average of 3.5 minutes discussing the diet and weight issues--about 15% of TerraSAR. There was little difference between patients, there were counselled vs. those who were not in weight loss. When researchers accounted for the physician communication style, however, they found a statistically significant difference between message styles. Patients if doctors spoke about diet and weight loss in a more encouraging fashion, using mainly reflecting or empathic declarations were much more likely to lose weight, compared with them, if doctors use a judgmental or more confrontational style of communication if doctors communicated. Patients well lost around 3.5 pounds, three months after the visit. Excellent study: first of its kind to examine specific Physicians ' communication style and its impact on patients ' weight loss study Possible. missing: communication styles are not always directly definable and, hence, there is room for interpretation.Another potential error is that the doctors was recorded. While they knew why, it can cause them to be more vigilant in addressing topics thoroughly. Physicians is an important part in the overall health of the wheels, they are front-line practitioners and, as such, they can have enormous influence on the success of the patients ' efforts to lose weight and improve health. counselling training will certainly help doctors to communicate effectively and "through" to their patients. At the same time, often doctors do not have many formal training in nutrition, exercise science and the specifics of how to lose fat, you must know the correct information before you learn how to deliver it.

In the end, I believe the patient is best served by a doctor who are both empathetic, but also honest and to the point. I also believe that, in addition to advising, training and more extensive training in nutrition, MDS should work closely with other health professionals who specialize in fat loss and nutrition.
